Hello Parents/Guardians & Cadets,
This Thursday is the Parent Open House Night. Parents are invited to join us this evening until 8:30 for an open house to meet with the Sponsoring Committee and Staff. Cadets will be participating in teambuilding activities in addition to some information sessions on Summer Training opportunities. The dress will be C5 (Green Field Training Uniform) or C3C (Blue dress uniform with elemental T-shirt), or white shirt and black pants, if your cadet has not been issued C5 or C3C. Cadets are always to bring with them a water bottle, a notebook, and a pen/pencil to take notes during their training. A reminder that doors will open at 6:30 pm to cadets. Please ensure that your cadets do not arrive earlier than this time.
PARENT OPEN HOUSE (THURS JAN 29TH)
On Thursday, January 29th, we will be holding a parent open house where parents can meet the staff to better understand what a typical training night looks like for their cadets and also have an opportunity to get more familiar with the Squadron Sponsoring Committee and their initiatives in supporting the activities conducted at the unit better.
DRILL TEAM PRACTICE
Drill team practice continues this Wednesday. Please refer to TEAMS for more details regarding location and time. Dress is civilian attire, and this activity is open to all cadets. Participation in the drill team provides cadets with an opportunity to make new friends, develop strong attention-to-detail skills and discipline, while learning cool precision drill that will be displayed at an area-wide competition and at the local squadron. All cadets are highly encouraged to participate. It is important to note that when the competition season approaches, the team will consist of 15 cadets that will be selected through tryouts based on their execution of all drill movements taught during the earlier practices.
BAND PRACTICE / MUSIC TRAINING
Band practice will continue this Saturday and more details regarding time and location are posted on TEAMS. Dress will be civilian attire. No musical background is required for cadets to participate. Cadets will be taught the fundamentals of music theory prior to being assigned an instrument. If your cadet participates in a music program through school and has access to an instrument, it would be extremely helpful for them to bring it to practices. There is a limited number of instruments at our disposal to loan out. Participation in music training enables cadets to obtain cadet music proficiency qualification levels, which can be worn on the dress uniform while developing very valuable and transferable skills. Cadets are to ensure they bring any issued workbooks and packages to them each week.
AIR RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP TEAM PRACTICE
The cadets identified by Captain Gillatly will continue their practice this Saturday from 0800-1200 hrs at HMCS PREVOST. Dress will be civilian attire.
SUMMER TRAINING APPLICATIONS
It is that time of the year to start submitting summer training applications for the 2025 Summer Training season. Please note that summer training is OPTIONAL and that an offer of participation is not guaranteed. At this point in time, summer training at a Cadet Training Centre (CTC) is only open to cadets in PROFICIENCY LEVEL 2 AND ABOVE. Attached is a presentation that outlines the summer training opportunities that are available along with their respective locations. There are also a number of virtual training opportunities available that provide the opportunity for additional qualifications and cadets are highly encouraged to seek out these opportunities as well. Please refer to TEAMS for more details.
AVIATION TRAINING DAY SATURDAY (FEBRUARY 28TH)
27 RCACS will be conducting an aviation-based training day on Saturday February 28th. As part of the training day, cadets will visit the Jet Aircraft Museum, the International Test Pilot School, and more. This activity will run from 0900 hrs - 1500 hrs (9AM-3PM). 100 cadets will be able to participate in this activity based on a voluntary signup form that is linked on TEAMS. The form will close on February 12th @ 9 PM. Please refer to TEAMS for more details.
ABSENCE REPORTING AND ATTENDANCE
If your cadet is unable to attend a training night, please ensure that an absence report form is filled out to excuse their absence. It is important to note that once a cadet has been absent for over 30 days without an excused absence (4 consecutive weeks of unexcused absences), they will be removed from the effective strength of the unit. The absence report form can be found here: https://forms.office.com/r/dRVZ6q3QDB
CADET365, ROUTINE ORDERS, CHAIN OF COMMAND
It is important that your cadet is checking their Cadet365 Outlook and Microsoft Teams regularly to ensure they are receiving the most up-to-date information. Each week, weekly routine orders (see attachment for your reference) will be distributed via their cadet email detailing the upcoming week's training along with any additional information for upcoming events and activities. It is expected that ALL cadets read this document. If they have difficulty accessing their account, please reach out via email to Lt Amoah (charles.amoah@cadets.gc.ca) as soon as account access issues are encountered.
It important that cadets begin to take the initiative to read communications and communicate with their superiors when they have questions. Each cadet has been added to a flight which has a senior cadet in charge. They can communicate with their flight seniors via their designated flight Microsoft Teams channel they have been added to. This ensures streamlined communication channels and efficient responses to questions, issues or concerns. Cadets should not be reaching out to adult staff directly to seek answers to minor questions or information that is addressed in the routine orders or can easily be answered by their senior cadet in charge. Communications of this nature from cadets will not be responded to, but rather redirected to the appropriate level in their chain of command.
Parents are always encouraged and able to reach out if they have questions or concerns; however we encourage you to give your cadet the responsibility of staying informed, clarifying information using their chain of command and keeping you informed, as it is an important life skill they should be developing that will serve them well beyond the cadet program.
DRESS INSTRUCTIONS
For details on how to wear the uniform correctly in accordance with the set standard, cadets are required to consult the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers (CJCR) Dress Instructions. This should be the primary reference for what the standard is for hair, facial hair and placement of insignia and badges. If a cadet is confused by what is presented in the instructions, they can use their chain of command to direct their question to a senior cadet of the Standards department for further clarification. Dress instructions can be found here: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/services/cadets-junior-canadian-rangers/cjcr-policy/cjcr-dress-instructions.html.
