Hello Parents/Guardians & Cadets,
Below are the announcements for this week. Please read this announcement in its entirety. This Thursday will consist of regular training, the dress will be C5 (Green Field Training Uniform) or white shirt and black pants, if you have not been issued C5. Cadets are always to bring with them a water bottle, a notebook, and a pen/pencil to take notes during their training. A reminder that doors will open at 6:30 pm to cadets. Please ensure that you do not arrive earlier than this time.
At the end of the evening, doors will open to parents at 8:50 pm for our final announcements for the evening, and cadets will be dismissed at 9:15.
FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS DAY
The squadron will be hosting a Fundamental Skills Day on Sat Oct 25th from 0800-1400. 25 cadets from each training level will be chosen to participate. Priority will go to cadets that are going through the accelerated progression stream. Signup was conducted in-person over the past two weeks. There are still a few spaces available for cadets in Levels 1, 2, and 4. Lunch will be provided to participating cadets. Training to be conducted will be concentrated on marksmanship, physical fitness and basic drill for Levels 1 and 2. For Levels 3 and 4, and Advanced Leadership Program, the focus will be on leadership, developing command presence, and instructional techniques.
BYRON LEGION POPPY BOX ASSEMBLY
The 15 cadets that signed up to volunteer their time assisting the Byron Legion in assembling poppy boxes are expected on Oct 29th. Community service hours will be signed off for those participating cadets. Please refer to TEAMS for more detail.
DRILL TEAM PRACTICE
Drill team practice will be continuing tomorrow evening. Please refer to TEAMS for more details about the time and location. Dress is civilian attire, and this activity is open to all cadets. Participation in the drill team provides cadets with an opportunity to make new friends, develop strong attention-to-detail skills and discipline, while learning cool precision drill that will be displayed at an area-wide competition and at the local squadron. All cadets are highly encouraged to participate. It is important to note that when the competition season approaches, the team will consist of 15 cadets that will be selected through tryouts based on their execution of all drill movements taught during the earlier practices.
BAND PRACTICE / MUSIC TRAINING
Band practice will commence this Saturday. Please refer to TEAMS for more details about the time and location. Dress will be civilian attire. No musical background is required for cadets to participate. Cadets will be taught the fundamentals of music theory prior to being assigned an instrument. If your cadet participates in a music program through school and has access to an instrument, it would be extremely helpful for them to bring it to practices. There is a limited number of instruments at our disposal to loan out. Participation in music training enables cadets to obtain cadet music proficiency qualification levels which can be worn on the dress uniform while developing very valuable and transferable skills.
AIR RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP FAMILIARIZATION
Air rifle marksmanship familiarization will also be continuing this Saturday. Cadets that wish to be a part of the air rifle marksmanship competition teams and/or the air rifle biathlon marksmanship team are strongly encouraged to attend as these familiarization shoots will also serve as tryouts for the competition teams. Cadets will have the opportunity during these sessions to obtain marksmanship qualifications which can be worn on the dress uniform. The range for this weekend will be operating according to the training schedule of the Fundamental Skills Day. Those cadets will have priority on the range over cadets not participating in the training day.
FALL GLIDING FAMILIARIZATON DAY
Given that the previous session was cancelled. All cadets that were part of that list will be considered first priority for the next session. There are no details for when that will be at this time; however, it is expected to take place in Spring 2026.
ABSENCE REPORTING AND ATTENDANCE
If your cadet is unable to attend a training night, please ensure that an absence report form is filled out to excuse their absence. It is important to note that once a cadet has been absent for over 30 days without an excused absence (4 consecutive weeks of unexcused absences), they will be removed from the effective strength of the unit. The absence report form can be found here: https://forms.office.com/r/dRVZ6q3QDB
CADET365, ROUTINE ORDERS, CHAIN OF COMMAND
It is important that your cadet is checking their Cadet365 Outlook and Microsoft Teams regularly to ensure they are receiving the most up-to-date information. Each week, weekly routine orders (see attachment for your reference) will be distributed via their cadet email detailing the upcoming week's training along with any additional information for upcoming events and activities. It is expected that ALL cadets read this document. If they have difficulty accessing their account, please reach out via email to Lt Amoah (charles.amoah@cadets.gc.ca) as soon as account access issues are encountered.
It important that cadets begin to take the initiative to read communications and communicate with their superiors when they have questions. Each cadet has been added to a flight which has a senior cadet in charge. They can communicate with their flight seniors via their designated flight Microsoft Teams channel they have been added to. This ensures streamlined communication channels and efficient responses to questions, issues or concerns. Cadets should not be reaching out to adult staff directly to seek answers to minor questions or information that is addressed in the routine orders or can easily be answered by their senior cadet in charge. Communications of this nature from cadets will not be responded to, but rather redirected to the appropriate level in their chain of command.
Parents are always encouraged and able to reach out if they have questions or concerns; however we encourage you to give your cadet the responsibility of staying informed, clarifying information using their chain of command and keeping you informed, as it is an important life skill they should be developing that will serve them well beyond the cadet program.
DRESS INSTRUCTIONS
For details on how to wear the uniform correctly in accordance with the set standard, cadets are required to consult the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers (CJCR) Dress Instructions. This should be the primary reference for what the standard is for hair, facial hair and placement of insignia and badges. If a cadet is confused by what is presented in the instructions, they can use their chain of command to direct their question to a senior cadet of the Standards department for further clarification. Dress instructions can be found here: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/services/cadets-junior-canadian-rangers/cjcr-policy/cjcr-dress-instructions.html
